Default Del Stubbs Detail Knife

This one just arrived in the mail. Nice Buckthorn handle and a super super sharp tiny blade. I bought it primarily to trim goose feathers to make an ink quill, but as a detail carver it will likely get much more action. The little wooden sheath is very secure too.

What a beautiful detailing knife! That handle shape is just about perfect for my needs. Where did you find this little gem? Who sells them?

I am getting pretty close to having every tool Del makes. I have yet to find one that I do not like. I gave this detail knife a short trial last night on some scrap and it is really going to be nice I think. The pencil hold or a more traditional hold both work quite well. Del knows how to set up an edge too. Everything he has sold me was ready to use out of the box....and more importantly easy to maintain that edge.

Pinewood Forge is indeed the place.

Hi Schwert. I was trolling through the forum looking for something else entirely when I came across your post about the detail knife and the use you had for it. I have been looking for some info on making quill pens ever since I found a bunch of pelican feathers in a gamepark. Do you know any websites that deal with making that kind of thing?

Cheers

Peter Connor

I found two that were very helpful. I have not yet done the soaking, tempering and cutting, but I think these sites could help you.

How to Cut Quill Pens from Feathers

Regia Anglorum - Anglo-Saxon and Viking Crafts - Manuscript Production - Cutting a quill pen

Both seemed good. I have Heron feathers that I am going to cut.

I got an ink pot and powdered ink for Christmas that set me off on this path...

I can see inky fingers ahead. Del's knife should cut these quills like no tomorrow.

Thumbs up Re: Del Stubbs Detail Knife

Excellent knife Schwert I now have both left and right hand hook and #2 open sweep bent knives by Del along with the short and regular sloyd. I don't think I will be getting any more for myself at this time but man are they nice knives.
