I purchased the Lyons detail knife last Oct. at the Dayton Carving Show and was lucky enough to talk with Dave himself, seems like a great guy....but the important part, I really like the small detail knife, holds a sharp edge long and really gets into tight spots....I don't think I would hestiate to p urchase one again...I had posted on this site, and they recommended a show and try before you buy, that is what I did, and the Lyons was my choice from all the vendors there!.....I also have a Dunkle knife, it is also great!...Dennis

If you like that knife, (i like mine) Lyons has one with a hooked blade. I bought it on a whim and now I would really hate to be without it. It really works for deailing.

I think you'll be very happy with your purchase! I only use Dave Lyons brand knives, I love them, they hold a perfect edge with just a couple strops on the 2000 grit 'sandpaper' and regular stropping.

I sure would like to meet Dave in person, I'd love to tell him how great his knives are! Deborah

Dan S,
any chance you have a pic of the hooked knife?....sounds like a nice knife....I meet Dave & his wife at the Dayton Ohio carving show last year, and he was a easy guy to deal with and being new he showed me a few things about the knife and usage....Hope to see him again this show!...Dennis

I've been using Lee Ferguson knives for the past 15 years. I really like the "flex" the blades have over the others which seem more rigid. However, for detail I'll reach for my Old Reliable every time. It hasn't failed me in the 40 some years I've been using it.

Marty,
I got my knife in today and for a one day critique I think it is going to be a good one. Of course I have a lot more to do with it but it feels good and cuts good.

I borrowed this pic from Little Shavers. Dave Lyons Knives at Little Shavers It's a Lyons #50501. It has a 1 1/2" blade. Anybody have this one? Tell me how you like it. All my knives are straight blades. I was thinking of trying this knife--or at least one with a curved blade--mostly for general carving/whittling and/or detail work. Also, how long is it from the tip of the blade to butt of the handle? Thanks

Bob L

I have several of the Lyons knives with the hooked blades and I love them for detailing work I have two of the longer ones and one of the shorter ones. The hooked knives work very well for doing eyes and I like them also for trimming out windows on cottonwood bark gnome houses. Lyons knives are great but be careful not to try lifting chips out with them. The tips will break because they are very hard which makes them brittle. They do stay sharp though! They are well worth buying.
