| | Dave Lyons detail knife Time to get me a detail knife and I think I'm going to go with a Dave Lyons knife.
Is the 50505 knife shown here at little shavers best for detailing? Of should I go smaller? Dave Lyons Knives at Little Shavers

| | Re: Dave Lyons detail knife Marty, I've heard a lot of good talk about the Dave Lyons knife, but not much of the other. I've been wondering about the David Sabol detail knife he say's thats the only detail knife he uses. I would like to know if anyone has tried it. You know how you get that pull towards the phone when you want to order something, do i need it or do I just want it. I'm still getting that pull.

| | Re: Dave Lyons detail knife I will give you "a penny of my thoughts'" because they're not "worth two cents," but I have all four knives under discussion and they are all good. Lee Furgeson makes a very good knife, so does Dave Lyons. Denny knives are good with a different handle shape. Dave Sabol makes a beautiful knive handle and inserts a Warren Cutlery blade that he has reshaped (nothing wrong with that for it makes a good knife) Bud Murray from Missouri makes another good knife as does Ralph Long out of North Carolina. Mike Shipley is now making the Ron Wells knife. All of these knife makers do so "for the love of what they are doing" and they take pride in their work by standing behind the quality. But there are many other knives around from Little Shavers, Woodcraft carries Butz, Pfiel and then there are Stubai and Dastra and on and on----the key is get you a knife, learn to sharpen it and whittle and carve away. Then get you another knife that you see another carver using and try their brand. I use all the one's named above and many pocket knives and utility knives all sharpened for carving. Lynn Doughty uses his "Old Reliable" razor blade utility knife and some use knives made from straight razors, power hack saw blades, old saw blades, flat boring bits; and for that matter any metal that will hold an edge when sharpened, so go for it, and remember my rule about buying tools: "One is plenty, two is to many and three is never enough." Arn't you glad I did not give two cents worth. |

| | Re: Dave Lyons detail knife I bought a Dave Lyons Cajun Carver (2-1/2") and I really don't like it. The blade has no distal taper, ie, the blade is the same thickness the full length. To flex properly, it needs to get thinner as you get closer to the point. And the handle is very small for even an average hand.

| | Re: Dave Lyons detail knife Marty, I have several Lee Ferguson knives and really like his detail knife. It is sharp and stays that way with a little stropping. You can't beat the price and free shipping!

| | Re: Dave Lyons detail knife I just ordered the Lyons 50505 Friday. I was glad to not see any negative posts after I saw you ask the question. I've been using a cheap knive and finally figured out it was time to make carving a little easier. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
