| | combating rust on tools I have my shop in an unheated garage, I use propane heat during the winter months when I am out there working, but my tools take a hit, is there something to put on the carving tool steel to reduce/prevent rust...try to wipe them down with scotch Brite type pad to clear the rust, but need a protectant...Dennis

| | Re: combating rust on tools Hi Dennis,
I am sure you can get this stuff elsewhere but I get mine at Woodcraft because it is convenient. T-9 is the neatest rust protector I have ever seen. It really works great. It does a great job on all of my cast iron tabletops also. T-9 Rust Protectant - Woodcraft.com |

| | Re: combating rust on tools "topsaver" works good, although we don't have much of a rust problem here in the desert. also WD-40 works well. Topsaver has a site www.empirefmg.com they sell a kit of 4 different items. |

| | Re: combating rust on tools An old fashioned but effective method is to coat them with a nice layer of Vaseline then wrap the blade in wax paper. The wax paper keeps the Vaseline from coating near by tools.

| | Re: combating rust on tools I have used T-9 in a salt air environment and it's great for marine and outdoor equipment. However, I tried to use it on cast iron in Southwest Missouri and it leaves a gummy film which I didn't like. I use wd 40 for a lot of applications but you must be awair it has an agent which will strip other protectants off and is not good in salt air environments.
I use Johnson's past wax on cast iron saw tops and it works best for me. I think if I had a rust problem with my hand tools I would use that product on them. |

| | Re: combating rust on tools Another good option is to keep a container of the once a month kitty litter in with your tools. (the crystal stuff). Do not get the mix of traditional kitty litter with crystals in it.
The crystals in that form of kitty litter are anhydrous (they suck in moisture) and will actually reduce the humidity in enclosed areas. If the humidity is reduced, the tools are less likely to rust.
That kitty litter is the same material in those little dissicant packets you find in new coats (I keep those and put them in the drawers with my tools too).

| | Re: combating rust on tools This brings a question to mind for those that use WD40 and Silicone sprays.
I know for a fact they can create problems in finishing.
Has anyone had problems finishing as a result of treating their tool with it? | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
