Default Clamping Solution?

Some of you know I have been searching for a way to clamp my irregularly shaped workpieces. The Jawhorse went a long way to solve my clamping issues, but I was still having problems with the jaws clamping unevenly or applying too much pressure to too small an area of the wood.

I've tried rags, wood wedges and even the Gyrojaw to no avail.

Then I was walking down the sidewalk and I saw a couple of black wedges, presumably used by a restaurant to keep their tables from rocking. I picked 'em up and tried them out earlier this evening and they may well be the answer. Time will tell.

The product is called a "SHUV-IT' no kidding! www.shuv-itinfo.com. The cost about a buck each and you have to by like 25 or so. I may order a bunch later on if they work out.

I've used them for a while. Both my sons were in the restaurant industry as waiters and carried them in their pockets during work just in case a wobble appears . I use them under my relief carving as one of the planks on my workbench is a little low and two of these wedges work great keeping it immobile

If you need a bunch of these wedges, an installation kit for laminated flooring - the click and lock type usually contains a couple dozen. Since they are only used for installation, there must be tons of them kicking around. Very useful.

How hard is that wedge stock material? A single gouge chip under a WRC carving puts an obvious dent in the otherside of that wood.

David, the product name reminds of an old Johnny Paycheck song. (-:

Looks like it might be helpful.
