Default Chip knives and sharpening

I just recieved a set of 5 German made chip knives in the mail today and am wondering what type of edge these require, steep edge or a fine razor edge. My second question is, What sort of cuts is the knife below used for?

Yep, it's curved with the edge on the bottom. The blade is only 1 1/2" long.

Nice looking blade, it could be for carving long curved sweeps for decoratons ? Hard to tell from the picture. Of course if you don't like it , you can always send it to me!

There could be a bit of a translation problem here ... some Europeans refer to any carving done with a knife as "chip carving."

As to what bevel to put on them, like any other knife, it depends on what you are going to be carving. Softer woods get one bevel, harder woods another.

Thanks for the info folks. This knife came with the "kit" of chip knives I bought, I read somewhere a long time ago that the kits come with knives that probably wouldn't be used for chip carving, further, I think the article said that you really only need a couple of different blade profiles, not a whole hockey sock full.

Bob........thanks for the offer, but I think I'll keep it, if for nothing else, at least I now have a sharp letter opener

you only really need a chip knife and a stab knife......I sharpen mine "flat" from edge to backstrap..........that works great on basswood, haven't had luck with any other configuration and haven't chip carved anything but basswood and a piece of pine that I eventually tossed!
