Default Case Seahorse Whittler

Has anyone purchased one of the Case Seahorse Whittler knives? I've looked at the one at Lowe's but really don't like the Day-Glo orange handle. Would really like to have a good folding knife but am too tight to pay for an orange knife I really don't like the looks of as far as color. Have bid on a couple on ebay but there again too tight to belly up to the bar and pay the price. Guess I'll just stick with my Uncle Henry until I'm ready to pay the price for a new one.

Keep watching Ebay. Sometimes some slip through pretty cheaply. I paid about $30 for mine which I considered a pretty good price. Of course, I didn't care about the color so the one I won had lime green handles. I've since seen a couple, not many, go by without bids.

Like Mikeg says - keep watching ebay. What happens is a couple guys decide they are going to collect them and drive the prices up temporarilly. Once they get done with the ones they want, one or two will slip through for 35 or less. Patience is the word. All that said, if your heart is set on a seahorse fine, but a better carving knife (IMHO) is the Kershaw double cross (modified) that Rick sells at littleshavers. I've got around 25 Seahorses but my daily user for carving is the double cross. I really like the Seahorses (I must with that many), but they're not my favorite for carving.

p.s. - Because a knife bears the name "whittler" does not necessarily mean it was designed for whittling. Whittler, as applied to pocket knives, refers to a particular method of construction. It's usually a three bladed knife with two equal length blades on one end and a larger blade on the other. The two equal length blades each have their own back spring while the large blade bears on the other end of those two backsprings.

I have to agree with Ed that the Double Cross is an outstanding knife, especially once Rick is done with it. I carry it with me all the time. I just wish it had a smaller one instead of the drop(?) blade. I also carry a small congress for the smaller blades. I have, and like, the SeaHorse Whittler but I don't usually carry it.

Thanks for the info. I need another knife like I need another hole in my head, but would still like to have one to carry around in my pocket. Hadn't thought of Rick at Little Shavers so will give him a look see as soon as the one I'm bidding on on ebay clears or I get it. Thanks again.
