| | Re: carving knives I too started with a Murphy knife. Still use it quite a bit. If you get it from Rick at Littleshavers.com, you'll be certain it's sharp!
btw, welcome aboard!

| | Re: carving knives Many different knives and many different opinions on which one. I am not a Murphy fan but many carvers love them. I have Denny, flexcut,Helvies,Lyon, drastra, many different pocket whittlers and even now a stanly no 199 utility knife. All great, all have their purposes. Got rid of the murphy. But then, Just my opinion! |

| | Re: carving knives Mike .. There are so many good carving knives available .. But how the handle feels in your hand is also important .. Murphy is great .. But I just love the feel of Ron Wells knives and they carve great .. He has a web site ... |

| | Re: carving knives If you have a local Woodcraft or Rocklers store in your area, go to the store and actually hold the various knives. You'll need two types: a roughing/carving knife and a detail knife. Find one that fits right in your hand, then buy the two different types of that brand. Personally, I like the shape of the Flexcut knives.

| | Re: carving knives I have a slew of Flexcut knives but my favorites are the ones that I made myself, caving my own handles and using $5.00 blades purchased from vendors at our Woodcarving Shows. You can't beat the feel of a handle designed for your own hand. And the blades hold an edge pretty good as long as they are stropped regularly. |
