I have a carving vise that I got from Woodcraft store that has a face plate very similar to what what shown in the photo. I use the slots in the base plate for insertion of wood screws into the bottom of the piece I am carving to hold it onto the base plate. I have some large wood screws that I have ground down the head on so that I can use a 3/8 socket to tighten them.
You need to leave an extra 1" of wood on the carving for the base. You can saw it off on the bandsaw when you are done or leave it and dress it up after you have taken it off the plate. To avoid hitting a screw with a gouge it is best not to carve the base while attached to the base plate.

OG,

i think you've hit it on the head, I'll take a closer look when i get home tonight. Your idea would keep the carving from twisting. Even if it wasn't designed for that it's still a good use for them!!!

Rocket39-i had a thought that those pins my be used as register pins.if you screwed a piece of wood (scrap pine) to base plate which was attached to your piece of carving wood.they could act as a register pin if you wanted to rotate the carvingor remove and refasten your carving into same location.
