Thanks for everyones input. I'll order one or two on Friday. I'm glad to hear that they have a thicker blade. Most of my knives (except the Helvie) are a bit thick but I really like them. The great thing about carving tools is they really don't cost all that much. I'll also look into the deep woods. I hadn't heard of that one.

Thanks again,
Dan

Dan...thought I'd put my 2 cents in, too.....Have several Cape Forge knives and love them all. I have found them to be consistent, dependable, and with proper honing, they stay sharp. Have several other types, too, but I have to say Cape Forge is one of my very favorites. Bonnie

Dan,

I have several Cape Forge knives - including their travel kits in different size blades. Great edge holding. Even though they are thicker blade backs, they glide very nicely through the wood if kept honed.

I broke the blade tip on one smaller blade - Karin wanted it sent back, which I did - she examined it and said it was tempered a little too long and sent me a replacement at no charge. I am pretty sure the web site does say the knives have a life time warranty. I have the curved blade you are thinking about - great knife. I use it for carving out concave areas on figures.

I have most of the other brands too - all good, but my personal favorites have been the four designs that Ron Wells has. Tough, sharp and stay that way, but they don't have the convex curved blade.

I have 4 Gouges, V Gouge, and the Palm set. They hold a good edge and are a beautiful appearance. They have a Unconditional Guarantee, which is , If you are not completely Satisfied at ANYTIME they will Repair,Replace,or a Full Refund. My Chip Carving Knifes tip broke off but a touch up on Grinder and back in business. Nice people to deal with. Oh, they are SHARP when you get them. Merle

Man! I can tell I am going to have to start looking at knives a bit closer....lol....I never realized there are so many to choose from. I have a couple of Helvie knives and have been very pleased with them. At the time I bought them I thought 35 bucks a piece was kind of high but I guess that might have been a bargain for a quality tool.

Hey there,
I have one Helvie. It does really well on softer woods but the blade chips when I carve hard woods like olive or any of the exotics. It' sort of funy, I have several knives but the one I always grab for first is the cheapest of the lot. It's a laminated steel carving knife I bought from Japan Woodworker. At the time I paid 12 or 13 dollars for it but Ithink they have gone up to 16.00. Thanks

I really like Cape Forge knives (6-8) and gouges (5-6) and drawknives (3) and travel kits (2) and custom tools (several).

They are a true custom forged product,,,,if you do not care for the thickness of the edge, send it back and it will be modified at no charge. At any time in the future you damage a blade or decide it is just not right,,,,it will be replaced or refunded no questions.

They are a class act for forged steel tools.

Regards,
Fred Krow

Hello,

I have two of the Cape Forge knives and they are very nice tools. The steel seems to be a bit brittle, and they are prone to chipping. For my money, I would recomend either the Helvie roughout, or the Ron Wells longer blade knife. Ron's knives ship razor sharp, and ready to use. Quite ecenomical too.

Good Luck,
Dan Heine

I received the cape forge knives about two weeks ago. They came razor sharp and cut quite well. I'm thinking of sending the larger one in for some modification. It just doesn't cut like the rest. It has a lot of resistance.

Thanks for all of the tips. Has anyone tried the curved plades?

Dan
