I want to pick it out myself. Are there any shops around the South Central PA / Maryland area I can visit to look at these knives?

Thanks Tony. Helvie Knives is now offering a much more diversified line of handles. You may even have your name engraved into the handle for a small fee. I only carry the original handles, but you should be seeing the new hardwood handles in stores soon. Rick |

Rick, have you heard anything about Helvie being bought out? I seen a Helvie with a double bevel, and questioned the change, that's when I was told of the change in ownership. Made a decision, I'll stick with my old ones, hope I don't break them! Bob |

Bob, Yes, Helvie Knives was sold in July 2004; I have not seen any change in quality. Since the business was bought by the workers/knifemakers, I doubt there will be a big difference. They are expanding their offerings and trying some new styles, which is a logical step whenever a business changes hands. Many carvers have complained about the convex grind that Helvie is known for; myself I like it. I have confidence in their products and will continue to stock them. I have personally known the new owners/knifemakers for over ten years. It is the same knife made the same way by the same person. They have just taken over complete control from Ken.

Last month I purchased three of the new Helvie knives. The convex edge is excellent on my large roughout blade. I intentionally pushed it through some dryed birch limbs with knots until the edge distorted,,,,,a quick strop on leather with Yellowstone and restored to new condition. The other two knives have the skew blade shape, one small and one larger, these are also convex and very nicely shaped. Regards, FK |
