Default Bowl adz?

I had a great time deomonstrating at an Art in the Park at Amicalola State Park a couple of weeks ago. There was a man there from NC who was using a handmade bowl adz that facinated me. I've been doing research on acquiring one, and may make one in the forge (with help).
I would like to ask if anyone here as a Pheil bowl adz, or any other brand that they enjoy. They can cost from $75.00 up to $300.00, and right now my budget needs to be very practical.
Any comments?
Thor

I saw where a fellow made one from a mason's hammer. He ground it to look like the bowl adz. He said it worked just fine for him. He kept it cool while grinding it with water.

As a matter of fact, a friend of mine said he would help me make one out of a mason's hammer (and I have one handy) next time he came over.....Thing is, he's really "famous" right now...it comes and goes....his name is Billy Roper, and he's not the Billy Roper associated with the KKK, he's a sculptor and a painter...anyway, I don't know how long it will take for him to have time to spend with me.
Glad to hear your friend is successful with his. That might wind up being my best option.

Thor,
Hi!
I have a beautiful one and I may have got it from the place I get Anchorseal from, in Atlanta. I'll take a look later today (I'm leaving now to pick up Amish neighbors whose baby is in Vanderbilt Hospital) and let you know what I find. The masonry chipping hammer is narrow, maybe 1 1/4", and I sharpened mine down to try as a carving tool, but it's nothing compared to a bowl adz...worth the money! with practice I'll bet you could turn out a big rough dough bowl in less than an hour with one--that would be a great demonstration in the park! I can see the chips flying now!

Here's a link to someone carving a bowl using a home-made adz:

http://www.bushcraftuk.com/content/a...showarticle=66

The adz looks simple enough to make--a handle, an old truck leaf-spring shaped for mousing, a wedge, and a piece of rope.

Works for me!

I was thinking Happy and I have also remembered that I saw a nice adz made from a mattock. It has a cut down handle and the blade is cut down also. The pick blade is ground off. It has a much wider blade than the mason's hammer. Just a thought. Might be able to find one at a yardsale or one from China at a discount store. I looked at the homemade adz made from the truck leaf spring and I like that idea best of all. I'd try using an old lawnmower blade, just because I already have one. I just might try to make one if I can find the right piece of wood to make the handle? Should be interesting to try it.Smile
