I bought a swiss made or phiel gouge and really seem to like it I have all flexcut tools so this feels so much different, I can actually feel the wood through the tool! All I have ever used was flexcut and you really can not feel the wood with those tools. I just wanted to see who out there uses Swiss Made tools and if they like them or they don't I would just like to hear what everyone has to say about them and also where is a place that has a real good selection of them. Also I side note I became a daddy on August 2nd I had a little girl so I running on no sleep and I have not touched a piece of wood yet but I hope to soon!

I use mostly Swiss-made tools for my full-size tools. I had the same experience with Flex-cut when I first tried them. I think carvers who start with Flex-cut learn to use them and many like/prefer them. Switching to Flex-cut seems to be a problem for those used to really sturdy tools such as Henry Taylor. Good luck. I think you'll find a lot of folks on the forum use Swiss Made/Pfiel tools. I have some mixed in my box along with some from other manufacturers. For instance I have a 1/2" #5 Ramelson that I just refuse to part with. For some reason it just feels good. I think you've discovered one of the reasons SOME people dislike Flexcuts. Others don't seem to mind. Different strokes.

I also started with Flexcut because in was priced right and available local, I have since replaced my knives with Denny, Wells and Helvie, and like them SO much better then Flexcut. As for gouges, I did buy a couple Denny gouges but I am not sure yet if I like them better then Flexcut, I may try swiss. Hope this helps. CONGRATS on the new baby !!! Hammer All The Best Dave |

They main supplier of Pfiel tools in the U.S. is Woodcraft from what I have read. I haven't seen them anywhere else except at a show (can't remember the name of the company), and Fleabay. I haven't used any swiss made tools besides a knife, but I am thinking about purchasing some of them.

My standard recommendation is to buy one and see how you like it. With the Pfeil's you probably will, but one never knows.

I started out with some Warren tools that came with the tuition for my first carving class. I then bought a set of Flexcut gouges and V tools. Just a few weeks ago I got a dozen Pfiel tools and I really like the feel of them. I gave the Warren tools to my grandson as he wanted to get his carving merit badge for boy scouts. I still use the Flexcuts when I do smaller items and I love the Pfiel tools for mallet work. As for knifes, A member of out local carving group makes knifes and I bought 2 detail knifes from him. I love the feel of them and they stay very sharp with only a little stroping. I hardly ever use the knife that came with the Flexcut set. I also bought a Murphy knife from Little Shavers and I use it for roughout work and stop cuts.

Well thank you everyone your input I know that everyone has different tastes as far as tools and I will just have to find ones that I like. But as always I always love to hear what other people have to say. Thaks! Andy |
