I'm looking for opinions on what bevel to use when making a carving knife. I've been using 19 deg (1;3) on mine, its good on Bass not so good on hardwoods. I put an arbitrary second bevel on one of my knives to work in hardwood, I've also heard of bevels in the 12 deg (1: 4.75) for basswood. if you could tell me what bevel you like for what material I'd appreciate it... I like a flat grind on my carving knives. I carve walnut most of the time and the knife cuts very well. John |

I am still on the learning curve on this one. In my limited experience, I have found that the flatter the grind, the better it cuts. I have had the best success with old HSS power hacksaw blades but they are hard to come by.

Three cheers for the flat grind, with the exceptions of "old reliable" (utility knife which I use a lot on found wood) and my Carvin Jack (Flexcut). A flat grind works great on basswood and the maintenance is a LOT easier! BTW, all of my other "store bought" knives have a blade thickness of less than .062". I also make it a practice to round off the top edge of the blades slightly, which reduces the wedge effect a little. L.P.
