Default The Best Kept Secret...

In the process of whittling my bears I've been using the scorp on my Flexcut Carvin' Jack which works well to a point. However, on larger bears the design of the knife prevents the right handed scorp from reaching the left ear of the bear.

Just prior to Christmas it suddenly dawned on me to try and find a regular right handed scorp with a wooden handle. However, as I serched the web I soon became discouraged with the $6.00 to $8.00 S&H that all of the better known woodcarving suppliers wanted to charge. The actual weight of a Flexcut Scorp with a wooden handle with the plastic packaging is just under 1-1/2 ounces. Think about it, if it was flat you could get away with mailing it in a 1st class envelope.

Anyway, after spending a couple of hours on the computer I found a company in Orem, Utah, actually about 24-miles from where my brother lives, whose main business is selling router bits, joiner blades, dado blades, saw blades, basically, wood shop equipment. But, for some reason they carry almost a full line of Flexcut knives, gouges and V-tools.

So I searched their web site and found that they carried the Flexcut KN22 3/16" right handed scorp, just what I needed to hollow out the bear's ears. Most places wanted $23.95 plus $6-$8 S&H. Routerbit World only wanted $18.59 plus $1.00 to ship it anywhere in the US. That's their standard shipping charge! I couldn't believe it.

I had two gift cards that I could use. First I tried a VISA Vanilla Gift Card that my daughter had given me for my birthday. For the life of me I couldn't figure out why it wouldn't work until the next morning when I started looking up Vanilla Gift Cards on the Web and discovered that you can't use them on line! I don't think my daughter even knows this.

Then I dug through my drawer and found an American Express Gold gift card that still had $22.00 left on it. That worked like a charm and I placed the order Thursday morning. Believe it or not, the scorp arrived at 12-Noon Saturday. How's that for quick service? For those of us who are Flexcut tool users this place has got to be the best kept secret in the country. In addition to Flexcut they carry Amana, Freud, Timberline, CMT, Bosch,Veritas, Olson and Tenryu products.

Great site. I am not much of a Flexcut guy, for some reason they just don't feel comfortable in my hands. But i am a router guy ad this site is much cheaper than where i currently purchase my bits. Thanks
Steve

I have a left handed skew gouge (Sk series, i.e. interchangeable) and keep running into needing to use it the opposite direction. So, I bought the right handed one today for $9.48 plus $2 S&H on eBay from Rose Antique Tools. Flexcut wants $12.99 plus $8.64 for S&H. Big difference--pays to shop around.

Eddy,
Thank you for finding that site. They have good prices on saw blades and router bits. Cannot beat $1 for shipping.
Merry Christmas.

Steve... I concur 100% on the Flexcut knives. I find the handles extremely awkward and uncomfortable to use. Just starting out I bought almost one of every knife they sold at the time and haven't used some of them at all. In fact, I wish now that I'd left them in the package so that they'd have a decent re-sale value. You'd think that Flexcut, being as successful as it is, would have thought to offer optional handle designs by now. However, I am a believer in the Flexcut interchangeable tools and have a good collection. I like the fact that you don't need a lot of storage space for a handle for each tool so that they're easier to transport and use from one location to another. Unfortunately, the scorp that I bought has the traditional Flexcut handle but since I'll use it only for a specific purpose and only for a very short time each time it's used I can live with it.

Good price Bob! I don't generally shop on the web and if I do I use a gift card so my shopping is hit and miss. I didn't even think to check ebay. That last time I visited it I got lost.

Bob"B"...I agree, especially for a commercial site. A $1.00 S&H is unheard of!

Suzy... You're welcome! That's why I posted the thread. I figured that if I hadn't heard of the company then perhaps there were others on the forum that hadn't heard of it either.

Eddie-Smiles, thanks for the web site to order tools, etc. I was just at our local woodcraft store to check on their bandsaw blades. Just like the last 6 months they don't have many and then not the size I need. (93 1/2 inch) They just don't keep them in stock for some reason. Anyway I will be ordering them from the site you listed. Thanks again! Dick
