At the risk of opening up a can of worms (doesn't that phrase inspire a carving?), what do y'all recommend for the best bent knife for carving spoon bowls?

Find the thread under "Woodcarving for Beginners" on the subject "Best size gouge for removing waste." It explores this question quite well.

I use one made by Diosbud. It works fine, is easy to sharpen and holds an edge well. I thing that the spoon gouges are better. The ridges left from the gouges can be easily removed with a "scraper". Denny |

You could also check out Pinewood Forge Scandinavian Knives it has some wonderful knives on it along with lots of good info. Gene

John Dunkle makes and sells curved knives. I have two of his curved knives, one right-handed and one left handed. I use them mostly for clean-up on concave surfaces such as spoon bowls. I wouldn't use them for general carving or rough-outs, since they're very thin, and made like detail knives. John goes to a lot of carving shows to sell his knives, strops and stropping compound. You can reach him at John Dunkle, 20400 County Road F, Archbold, OH 43502. Phone 419-494-5948. |

I love my knife from Pinewood Forge! It cuts well and holds an edge good. Hope to buy more from him.

I have only done a couple spoons, I used and really liked the Denny sidewinders, and his spoon gouge. I do have a Pinewood Forge carving knife and have no complaints. Dave |

I will highly recommend the knives from Del Stubbs at Pinewood Forge Scandinavian Knives I have a large number of his knives, I have some videos on youtube that show them in action, top quality very good steel. A friend of mine has a john dunkle thats a curved blade but it is just too thin and small for my liking, I don't know if John makes heftier models but I always think I will break it if too much force is used. Take to Del tell him what you'd like to do and he will be able to help you figure out what you'll need and be comfortable with. Carl

scarver, The best bent tool for carving spoons is made by North Bay Forge. This is his website: Home for North Bay Forge - Wood Carving Tools and Kitchen Cutlery Knives I also sell them, but the selection is better at North Bay. Jim hand-forges each knife (In my opinion; he makes the best blade). He has a special treatment he applies to the steel; I have tried to learn what it is, without success. Here is a little history about North Bay Forge. He lives on a small island at the very Northwest corner of the lower 48 states. He forges every tool himself on an anvil. Until a couple years ago the island had no electricity. When you open this site;click on (bent-knives). On the next page; scroll down and click on (Russian Spoon Carver).
