I bought two sets from Widget Supply. One is the 6-piece set that's similar to the one from Little Shavers. It came pretty well sharpened but I'm a perfectionist and it didn't take much to get them razor sharp. The other set was the 12-piece set. It was more crude and needed more work but for me that' fine.

My own personal preference for sign carving are full sized tools, like Pfeil, Stubi, Ashley Isles or Henry Taylors properly sharpened.

Pfiels set would be my choise and hang the cost, they are going to last you a lifetime, so what an investment you'll be making, and commitment.

I've done lots of signs and never a complaint.

Go for it.

Bob

Hey Bob. Thank you so much for your advice. I was having interest in sign making. And I always wanted to do it. And I am really very thankful to this forum as it worked as a great source of information for me.

Mine are not the best, but for a beginner I think they work real well and they were made completely with a set of $35 ramelson palm gouges. My first took a ton of time, my second was pretty quick. You DO NOT have to spend $300-$500 dollars on a set to get started or to see if you will like it. I bought a drake gouge to pull our more wood and my third was really fast. I am working on my fourth now, and were it not for a block in the creative process it would be close to finished. I do plan now after finding out, yes in fact I love carving, to buy individual gouges and chisels in the two hand or mallet style, even then I will still use these palm tools for small works quite abit. Find out if you like it first before you invest the money. That is just me, but I mean I started with not artistic or woodworking background at all.
