| | Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? I just got a Pfeil scorp and I'm not sure how to sharpen it. I have a wet cone I'm trying to use on it, but I'm not happy with the results. Anyone have any idea how to sharpen one of these things?

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? Just like a regular knife only in smaller increcrements. A curve is really a flat plane if divided into small enough increments. There has to be an easier way to say that, but ...... To do the inside of the curve a slip stone would help. The outside, a regular stone. That's not much of an explaination, but given my brain dead circumstances, best I can do at the moment. |

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? there is a wetstone for sharpening about any shape made,
im a fan of the scairy sharp method maybe a dowell or plastic cylender with 600 grit wet dry, if its sharpened inside,
otherwise your just gonna have to tough it with a regular stone or send it out to rick |

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? I don't own any scorps, but do have several "bent knives"; similar to scorps, and I sharpen them with a round diamond fish hook sharpener followed up with a round creamic stone. Most of the round ceramic stones come in pairs as part of a "sharpening system" and are a bit pricey, but I found a single 1/4" diameter rod, about 3" long with a turned wood handle that I use a lot. Both are available in the sporting goods section of most hardware or departmant stores. And as they are "sporting goods" not carving stuff, they are fairly reasonable. Got both of mine for under 6 bucks a piece.
Don't forget to hit the backside with a small flat stone or diamond bar. I'm really partial to these small pocket hones...they can go with you in a pocket and still do a good job. The diamond ones don't need any water or oil, come in two grits fine and "coarse", which is still pretty fine. I like the fine ones; they still cut pretty fast and give a reasonably fine finish.

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? I made a bent knife from a warren blade, I sharpened and hone with a dowel as Thomp said, one with sandpaper, fine grit, and another with leather for stropping....worked fine. I also use the same for a curved blade farriers knife I have....(idea from Al) |

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? When I was in a carving club a fellow carver took my scorp and sharpened it exactly as Hi Ho said it came out great. He even gave me a dowel with leather wrapped around it and said to put honing compound on it to keep it sharp
While in my little shop yesterday I found a can of polishing compound for cars so I put that on an old leather belt and it worked as well as any honing compound I had .Just thought I would mention it |

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. I found a video clip at North Bay Forge that shows how to sharpen a bent blade with a dowel wrapped in leather exactly as mentioned in this thread. If you want to see it go to http://www.northbayforge.com/sharpen...htm#maintarget. I got close to sharp with my water cones, but couldn't get the edge I wanted. This weeked I'll try the cones again and I'll make a dowel hone to finish off the edge. I'll probably rub a little yellow stone on the leather which should do the trick. As for the flat side, I'll use my strop wheel to set it right. I'll let y'all know how it ends up. Thanks again.

| | Re: Anyone know how to sharpen a scorp? I made a strop out of an old tinker toy dowel and a piece of leather. Rubbed a little yellow stone on the leather and went to work. After about an hour I was close. Will keep working it until I have the edge I want. I love low tech solutions!
