| | Anyone carved with Cogelow tools? Santa brought me a set of Cogelow tools. I want to know if anyone here has used these tools and what they think of them. They look weird to me and I need some advice about their usefulness before I send them to Rick for sharpening. My wife is so determined that I will love them but I think a salesman has convinced her. I want the opinions of people that I trust so I am asking you. HELP! |

| | Re: Anyone carved with Cogelow tools? I'm not familiar with "Cogelow" tools, but I did a search and found several Henry Taylor brand sets designed by Fred Cogelow. Are these the tools you are asking about? If so, Henry Taylor makes some excellent tools. I have several and only one was I dissapointed in. That was a V tool that had one heavy wing. After playing with it a while I got it sharpened to where I'm quite pleased with it. the other Henry Taylors all needed further honing to get them up to cutting speed. The factory told me they would replace it if I got it back to the store where I bought it, or sent it to them. However I bought it in Ohio....800 miles from here and HT tools is in England, so postage would have been prohibitive. HT tools advertise their tools as "factory sharp" and recommend they be honed prior to use. No deception on their sharpness by HT.

| | Re: Anyone carved with Cogelow tools? To categorize the Cogelow "style" tool is to describe them as bent skews. Of course, not all of the tools fit into this category, but it does describe how his set is different than others. This can be seen in the photo provided by Al.
Anyway, these tools are very useful for detailed carvings with undercuts similar to relief carvings. I have a couple of tools that are designed similar to these that are handy on special occasions, but aren't used for "daily" carving.
I will add that the tools on my "wish list" fit into this style (bent and/or skewed). |

| | Re: Anyone carved with Cogelow tools? I have sharpened three sets like the one shown in the picture.
They are challenging to sharpen, and (I would assume) to carve with.
These tools require two hands just to control them.
I wouldn't consider them big chip movers.
I doubt I would run out and buy them, but I would never turn them down as a gift. |

| | Re: Anyone carved with Cogelow tools? My set was one of those Rick did his magic on and they cut sweet! You'd be surprised at how much you'd use them Rick, they were well worth the money. Forget the factory sharpening BS, have Rick put an edge on them, like night and day!!!
