Default Another modified Whittler...

This is an old Frontier Double Eagle I've had about as long as the Schrade Uncle Henry I modified last. The blade on this is thinner than the Schrade, but it is "Imperial Stainless" (whatever that is) and like the Schrade is made here in the good ol' USA.

I'm going to have to get my Canon Digital Rebel out to take pictures with, I'm tired of the low quality photos my Blackberry takes.

Your having way too much fun with all of those knives Ed. It looks like that is cutting on that block just fine. Should remove some wood in a hurry.

Does it slice nicer than the thicker blade? Also, how is the Rebel? I'm lookin' at cameras.

Tom,

Yep, I'm having a blast. This one had been put away in a leather sheath and the brass had turned green. A little polishing and modification on the blade and now I have another nice take-along. It slices through wood real nice.

David,

I like both of them, but this one will do roll cuts better. The thick blade is super sharp, but doesn't do roll cuts that well.

The Rebel I have is the original with 6.3Mp and it works beautifully. I got lazy and started relying on my Blackberry for every day photos. The new Rebel is even nicer. I'd say it would be a choice between the Rebel and the Nikon D70(?) for a good digital SLR.

Thanks, Dave, it works great. The blade is 2" and the handle is 4 1/4" it fits in my hand great and holds a super edge.

looks good Ed , looks like its pretty sharp, how do you grind the blade down to get it to the size you want??

Nice looking whittler there Ed. I have one with a chipped tip so might have to try this myself.

BTW,

Imperial bought Schrade in 1946 so the similarity to your "Uncle Henry" is expected.

Hi Hal,

It is sharp. The edge isn't quite as good as my Schrade, but it's a very close second. The blade was already flat ground so all I had to do was take off the secondary bevel. I use a cheap Harbor Freight 1x30 belt sander with a 80grit Zerconia belt. The blade had an up-turned tip and was about an inch longer than it is now. When grinding a blade down like that I dip it in water every few seconds to keep from removing the temper of the blade. Once I got it the right shape, I finished up with a 100grit and then a 250grit disk on my drill and then polished it with my home made leather power strop.

This is about the 10th knife I've modified. Eventually I'll get to point of knowing what I'm doing.
