Default Abandoned my Tormex

Unpacked my "Jool Tool" from it's box a couple of nights ago. All I can say is WOW! What a machine! I took my damaged tools and put razor sharp edges back on them in lighting speed, touched -up my smaller gouges with the same results.

My "Tormex" , at the present time sits abandoned, and the "Jool Tool" has now taken it's place on my carving bench!

Been wondering about this too Mark! I'm pretty pleased with the ultimate sharpener as far as knives go. I was wanting something like this for my gouges. Does it get the metal hot? It seems like it runs at a pretty high RPM.

Mel, This system does not get your tools hot. The ninja discs are designed to allow air to weave in and out between the cut -outs. These cut- outs in the discs also gives you the "see through technologly" letting you see the bottom of the tool and the angle you are putting on the bevel. This machine has a reostat, the faster the disc travels the more air you move, creating a vortex of air within. I have used the machine at lower speeds and the tools still remain cool. The system has alot of extra accessories that can run a little pricey, but you get some of the accessories when you buy the machine to get you started , including a buffing wheel with rouge.

It looks interesting, especially that you can see the surface that you're sharpening! I love my Tormek, though.

Works great on knifes, and the instructinal DVD that came with the system also covers this area for sharpening and honing. With this machine your just barely kissing your tools against the abrasive disc's, the disc's do all the work, you whould think the corners, or tips of your knifes whould catch between the cut-outs in the disc's, but they dont, also mentioned in the DVD, I still keep my safty glasses on. As far as hitting the back of your tools, theres a bristle brush availible in a 1" to 3" radial from 80 grit down to 1 micron that works excellent for the removal of burrs. The wheel spins counter clock-wise........ I'm starting to sound to much like a commercial!

Hey Mark -

Another question. A few months ago I was asking questions about Chris Pye's take on powered sharpening and manual (stones) sharpening for beginners - basically that ALL beginners should learn to sharpen using stones and only then move on to powered sharpening, grinders, etc. The concern being that until you know what sharp is and the basics of how that geometry is achieved, and beginner is more likely to screw up their tools and gouges or flat out ruin them with power than without.

The question I have is this. Does the JoolTool overcome that concern? It sounds like it might since you are only barely kissing the abrasive, there is little or no heat build up if you follow the instructions, AND you can actually SEE the edge and the changes you are making while you make them.

I'd rather not spend a few hundred on stones when I am eventually going to want to go to powered sharpening anyway, and could use that money to go right to my powered sharpening solution.

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Chuck

No I don't think so, I believe every carver should learn how to sharpen without the power first......imo
