| | Re: 3000 grit sandpaper Hi all,
this is my first post and as sharpening, tooling and steels are some of the subjects I teach, I thought I might add this information for anyone who is interested. I am attaching an grit chart that compares the Japanese (JIS) grit system to FEPA (European), ANSI and other systems with a 3M ave. particle size in um (microns or micrometers). Shapton sizes their finishing stones in the JIS and the um systems. The 30,000 stone is rated at .48um, the 15,000 stone is rated at .96um and the 8000 stone is rated at 2um. There are 25.4um in 0.001", so a 30,000JIS stone works out to about 1/50 of the minimum thickness of a human hair (0.001" to approx. 0.004"). Another relative measure is 20# printer paper which is 0.004". DMT is offering a diamond stone in 8000JIS grit (3um). Most carvers usually end up in this range when finishing.
Kindest regards,
Bill |

| | Re: 3000 grit sandpaper The first time I ever heard the term Scary Sharp I wondered who this person Scary was. Certainly it wouldn't be called that if it sharpened your tools to the point of their being scary. I have a lot of tools laying around my carving area that are very sharp but none of them scare me! |
