Default 3000 grit sandpaper

I bought some 3000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and found that it sharpens my blades quite well. What I want to know is whether it is bad in the long run. My best water stones are 2000 and 4000, so the 3000 splits the middle.

I can think of no reason the finer grits of sandpaper would do any harm.
I have been doing it for years. $40-50 dollars for a quality stone buys a lot of sandpaper and I have been using the scary Sharp method for many years.
I rarely sharpen a blade,I have found once sharp, frequent stropping will keep the blade in condition where sharpening is not needed.

I just did the search of scary Sharp method on the forum and learned a great deal about the method. It has been well covered in the past; I just didn't know it. Thanks for the tip.

I don't have any 3000 grit sandpaper. If I cut my sheet of 1500 in half, will it be 3000 grit? Mike

It all depends on how you cut it, Mike.

Seems to me you would want to fold your 1500 grit to get 3000 not cut in half. What do I know though.

im definitely a fan of scary sharp method,

for $10 bucks in any town you can buy a variaty of 3m wet dry a supply that would last for years.

or cheaper buying single sheets from auto parts shop.

and a 12" sheet of Plexiglas..

you can drop it or toss it and not worry about breaking it or stone maintenance,

i have many stones around here, but maintenance on them makes me lean towards the easy abrasives

scary sharp is a cheap easy way for beginners to keep their tools sharp..

xsailer, if you fold it in half, it becomes 750 grit. Mike
