Question Yo, squbrigg, please

I've been looking at your amazing Dragon's Head relief. I've never understood any kind of relief ... it escapes it me completely ..... but I really don't understand that. Please tell me you carved the head and then glued it to the background board.
TIA

I'm sorry Nancy.....it's one piece of wood. No glue, just patience! Glad you like it though. I wouldn't lie and say it was easy. I used a drawing from Lori Irish's book on Dragons, traced it all on a piece of 2" thick X 10" X 10" Basswood......got stuck (overwhelmed with detail)......erased the whole thing and started with just the basic highlights of the head (like bone structure) then started details one by one. I used a drill press with forestner bits to reduce the background. Actually turned out easier than I expected.
