Look up Relief Carving Tilted Work surface. If you can't find it let me know and I will email you some pictures. You will be allot more comfortable carving looking straight ahead at your work instead of down. At least this works for me.

You might look up a bench hook....I made one, most people have one I think, works great for flat work.
