Practice, practice, practice...
To be a bit more helpful though, if you use the the "Search" function at the top of the page and enter "tool sharpening" you will find more information than just about any other topic on the the Forum.
Any particular sharpening technique/tools still comes down to the fact that sharpening is a skill and as such can only be mastered by practice and experience.
Pick a system and get some sharpening time under your belt. Understand that it will take a while to get good at it but there are no shortcuts.
Been there.

Welcome to the forum!

If you go back to the start page of the forum: http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/forum/ and scroll down about 2/3 of the way, there is a specific forum titled Woodcarving Tools, Technology & Sharpening which has 2,406 threads - and a significant number of those threads are about sharpening.

In addition to the above info, if you start with a "sharp" tool, most of the time all you need to do is strop. "Sharpen" only if you nick the blade.
