OK Bob, so some of us can't think in micro-dimensions.
I admire you for what you do, but sorry, no can do. I have to wear old-lady spectacles just to work on my "bigger" pieces, and cannot imagine working on the dimensions that you and the other ship model builders do so well.
I'm in the process of preparing one of my studios (don't laugh, I have several) to accomodate "the headboard carving" and it will take up more room than any other space I"ve worked on so far, and I've carved 10 foot long boards for the trim in my living room.
Yes, 5 1/2" X 5 1/2" is extremely small to me.
It's also very fun. Mine's coming along, but under no circumstances do I want it virtually next to that wonderful owl of Susan's.

Don't worry Thor, I don't expect everyone to be as crazy as me! I admire good carving at any size, and a headboard would be a wonderful expression. I look forward to seeing what you do with it. A wood quilt square at 5 1/2" is a reasonable size, most relief carvings I've done are larger than that, 10" - 24". But doing the carving on a model is a challenge, so small, it makes me a better carver for the large stuff. The smallest model I've ever made was only 3 1/2" in length, a fully rigged brig under sail. Practice small, pefect big.

justanick ... Glad you are joining the fun. The digital film goes in that 1" wide by 1/8" slot marked memory chip Talking .

Thor ... Ah, come on now Good Lady! There is a real difference between high relief carving as my owl and low relief as I would expect you to be doing on your Tree of Life. In fact, I really can't imagine a Tree of Life done any way but low relief. So I don't think you can compare the two styles of carving. And remember I've seen your work, it's great!!!!!

OK ... back tracking for few postings. Wood that is purchased through the mail is measured in board feet and comes in 1/4" increments for thickness. That thickness is measure when the board has not been planed, still rough cut along the surface. So you order your thicknesses as 4/4 (1"), 6/4 (1 1/2"), 8/4 (2"), and so on. Usually you lose 1/4" during the planing process so a 4/4 board dresses down to 3/4". I usually order 4/4 board as wide as I can find with only one side edge planed. That gives me an extra 1/4" of working depth and gives me one straight, smooth edge for measuring. Since I am not planing the wood as I would in wood working I get to use that extra 1/4"!

A board foot of wood is the thickness times the width times the length = 144 cubic inches. So a board that is 4/4 (1") by 6" wide by 24" long equals 1 board foot. Generally a 20 foot board pack will give me 6 to 8 nice wide pieces about 5 to 6 foot high, which lasts me a while.

Sorry I got ya confused.

HI again,

I'm posting 2 pictures of the "oak tree quilt piece" that I'm working on.
Susan, I'm stretching to improve. I would love some input and suggestions.
I haven't put a finish on it, and I have attempted to make it stand out from the background more than I have ever done before. It's still kind of rough, but very nearly done, unless a constructive suggestion can get me pushing myself a little futher.
Suggestions welcome.
Thor

Oh Thor!!!! I love it!!!!

You have lots of depth and absolutely great dark shadows because of it! Those acorns are perfect. I really like the gouge work to the background area. You didn't ignore the background - you textured it.

Nice undercutting around the leaves and the photo really lets us see them.

I too think that one done ... well done!

Since we are doing a Virtual Quilt, Hi_Ho, you can use any size that you want. Mine just happen to be 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 ... Are you joining us? Talking

OH? Maybe someone here knows but don't wood quilts also include wood burned squares???
