Susan I love the owl really well done. I love the depth you achieved in such a narrow piece of wood. BTW how thick was the wood I know you said 51/2X51/2 but you didnt mention thickness. If you can wait for me to attend a woodshow and get a piece of wood count me in too. Not sure what I will carve but it will probably end up looking like a woodspirit LOL. There is a big wood show coming up in our area in November I will look for a piece of wood.

It's worked on 4/4 basswood and is on a 5 1/2" x 5 1/2" square.
4/4 basswood? Would that mean 1" thick basswood?

Colin,
Susan said in an early post that it was 4/4. That's 4 quarters of an inch, or 1" thick. I imagine you just missed it, but know about quarters as a measurement in wood...6/4 = 1 1/2", 8/4 = 2"...I don't know why they measure it that way, and I think it's just on "finishing" type woods, like hardwoods.
If I'm able, I'd love to carve one, but I have 8 Auctions to do in the next 4 weeks plus we're due to close on selling a property that will make it possible for us to buy that FARM! We need to take some time off to go find that farm, so it's a very busy time...also promised one of my two Sons who evacuated New Orleans that I'll help him move to New York City in less than a month (he figures he was able to salvage less than 5% of his belongings, but maybe 25% of his art supplies. He also found his Grandfather's wedding ring while hosing out the muck!).
I'm looking for a grass skirt so I can sweep while all this is going on!
I would love to be involved in this project, but don't count on me. I know it's going to be
C O O L!!!
Wade

Thor, Honestly I don't know if it is feasible to gather the carved squares, mount them and offer them for auction for charity. I believe that the scope of such a tack could be overwhelming to any one member of the forum especially this time of year. And, as an odd thought, if we did gather enough squares could you imagine the problems of trying to ship something of that size and weight!

For now, let's see how many takers we get on doing a virtual quilt. If you get a square carved send me the image through e-mail. I can save the images, crop them and create the quilt image that can be posted here on the forum. And if there are enough I can then organize them as a possible article submission to WCI as an example of what type of great things we do here.

Does that sound OK??? We can all keep our squares and if it does become possible, with enough carvings, to create a real quilt then we can decide how to go from there.

Susan

I just read Wade's post ... again if we leave it open as a virtual quilt anyone can post a square when they have a chance to, no real time limit.

Susan, I understand.
I jumped right in, cut out my square, designed it and it's in the rough out stage already. Anything to get away from that acanthus leaf I'm still being haunted by! 5 1/2' X 5 1/2" is such a little size, it's going pretty quickly.
I may even do another one with a bear on it!

I think it's a fine idea. A virtual quilt.......all relief carved! I'll see if I can find a piece of wood big enough and try one. Love the owl BTW.

I think we will all understand if you, Good Sir, chose to do a quilt square 5 1/2 cm x 5 1/2 cm ... now where did I put my microscope???

Glad you are joining in!
