In another thread, Mottles asked about how the wood blocks are assembled to make the quilt. This is a relief and chip carving project that our group of whittlers and carvers from the local senior center is doing. I was asked to assemble the blocks into a frame. The blocks are 5" x 5". The frame wood is from old poplar (173 yrs old) that was siding on an old mill that was built in 1835. The frame was made first, with a rabbet (groove) cut out of the back side, so a 1/4" piece of plywood backer board can be fit into the frame. The 1/4" piece of plywood backer board is next fit into the rabbet. The wood squares are then glued to the plywood backer board, with 3/8" strips separating them. These strips are also glued to the backing board. I Think that the best way to display this project is on an easel. Tom H Last edited by Tom-H; 07-30-2008 at 10:50 AM. |

Great variety of carving designs! I love wood quilts and on this one I especially like your layout of the patterns with the dark chip in the center and the round designs taking the NSEW position. Please congratulate your senior center group on such an accomplishment! Susan |

Hi Tom H, thank you, for showing us your quilt project and for an explaintion of how you go about putting the quilt together. I agree with Susan, nice job placing the tiles so they compliment each other. Neat! Kathy Susan if you see this--your Avatar makes me smile! Kathy
