Hello again. I've seen alot on finishing a chip carving but don't think anything was seen on how to prepare a piece of basswood for chip carving. Is there anything special that needs to be done to the wood before you start? Thanks, Jeff |

From what I can gather it should be finish sanded before you start. The rationale is that sanding would soften the crispness of the chip cuts. I suppose it depends what effect you are seeking.

If you are transferring the design to the wood surface, it should be smooth rather than rough cut.

Jeff, When I want the surface to to remain lighter I sand with 400 and 600 grit paper and then spray poly for two coats. I then use gel stain. The poly keeps the stain off the surface. I use gel stain and wipe excess right away to prevent the stain from wicking under the poly. The cuts will always take more stain than the surface. Hope this helps. Bill K. |
