It has been a few years or is it a decade now since I did any chip carving. Back in the day a used a regular whittling knife. When I bought a set of knives on Ebay it came with a chip carving knife. It has been sitting for a while so I thought I would give it a try. I ripped a whittling block into some 1in wide strips about 1/2 in thick. I was inspired by an old wood desk ruler I save from the trash at work. Nice piece of wood but rather thin to carve or chip carve. My goal is to refine my skills so I can make at least decorative ruler. Sort of like this USB drive http://www.itechnews.net/wp-content/...rive-4GB-1.jpg Anyway wish me luck I will let you know if I make any progress. |

Good luck Tom, if that is the design that you are going for you shouldn't have any problems. That is one of the basic Chipcarving Cuts. It takes a little practice and staying with it you can do it. Merle

Thanks for the encouragement! Need to do something watching the Hurricane inch up the east coast, I live in Central Maryland! Watched the Wayne Barton DVD with the basics. Notice his knife if angled differently than most. So I studied how the cutting edge of the knife enters the wood and cuts . So using what the knife I have held slightly differently I obtain the same results. Now I must practice , practice , practice. Since the chip carving I plan on doing is the same pattern repeated, I need to be consistent on every cut to keep it looking good. Not sure if my practice piece will be heavy enough for paper weights but I can always glue washers into the back to give it more weight. |

You are correct that you need to be as consistent as possible with a repeating pattern. Practice, practice, practice! Best of luck
