Just wondering which knives to start with, for flat or chip carving, just a beginner, do not wish to spend too much, especially since I am not sure if of my skills . Have not carved anything yet, just reading as much as possible. Thanks

I would suggest a straight edged knife like a chip carving or detail knife, but you can start with any sharp blade. Some members here suggest using a utility knife, so you can change the blade when it becomes dull. Be sure to read the Similar Threads listed at the bottom of this page.

pallin, thank you for your time and reply. have been looking at a set of 2 or 3 chip carving knives by Flexcut. not too pricey, and may fill the bill. would appreciate any opinions on these. Thanks again.

Flexcut says: "It is triple heat-treated to make a hard cutting edge that stays sharp" This is just a gentle reminder that you get what you pay for. That being said, the normal (lower priced) version may be the one that makes the most sense. Regards, Bill Whig |

Thanks again to all for your time and input, much appreciated. Working on a Lap Board currently, found the idea on this site, figured it would be a good thing to begin with while I choose knives and wood to try my hand.

pto: If you really need a dose of "Tool Pornography," check out pages 80/81 in the Sept2011 tools catalog from Lee Valley Tools. I would suggest also you have a look at a 1000/4000 grit waterstone, a wood-backed leather hone and some stropping compound. Dull tools are both frustrating and dangerous. |
