West Coast Native Carving/Painting

I'm not sure if I would call this a relief or a chip carving as I have never done either before. I always wanted to own a West Coast Native carving so I decided to try and carve one. The painting took me much longer than I expected.
For those who are more familiar with this type of carving, please excuse my ignorance as I didn't have anything to go by but a picture so I may have represented this style of carving incorrectly.
If you can see from the picture, I brought the wolf to the forefront by removing the parameter and if you look closely you'll see three layers in all.

This was an old piece of birch that didn't cooperate really well so my sanding was challenging with the gouges in the grain.

Well its my first one and hopefully not my last. This is not my staple style of carving so any critiquing is welcome.

Wonderful carving sir really well done. You never cease to amaze me that is a great carving and its your first native carving. I dont see anything wrong it is great really compliments the Haida style of carving. I cant wait to see your new endeavours. Funny you and I are following the same path I cant wait to start on my new native carvings but too busy with christmas and family stuff this time of year. Thank goodness I have all my commissions finished I think I will take a break until new year. Again love the new piece.

I like this piece a lot. I have more and more appreciation for the west coast native themes from the exposure on this board. The colors and shapes of the animals are so layered and filled with points of interest.
I bet this was fun to do.
