| | Re: Two Sisters Very nice. The little one is very expressive. I may have missed this in the earlier postings but I noticed you hadn't put any pupils in the eyes. Any special reason to leave them that way or just preference?

| | Re: Two Sisters Doug ,
I usally use a number of gouges to get the face structure , then I smooth it using 400 sandpaper. But usally only takes a few mins, as long as the cuts were clean.
Patrick ,
Carving pupils is really realitively new if you consider the length of time that people have been carving. The classical greek, and roman carving rarely have pupils. The reason is easy to understand. If your doing a carving and presenting it as physically correct , adding the pupils would be incorrect. The eye itself is a ball. and as such has no openings. If you have noticed , I never place pupils into my portraits. Yet if I am doing fanasty work; wood spirtis , greenmen , dragons, Santas, almost all of them have pupils.
In the portraits , I want the carving to express the emotion, by adding the eyes pupils to the carving people will see less, they will look to the eyes and then stop looking. If they can not see the emotion in the eyes they are forced to look at the carving to see what I want them to see. The warmth, the pleasure , the joy , that comes from the body language, the closeness , and the attitude of the carving.

| | Re: Two Sisters Garry, thanks for the explanation on the rational for no pupils. I recall receiving a message from one of the carvers that I needed to make some modifications to one of my carvings as the eyes needed "an escape" for the viewer as the eyes tended to draw you in...and as a result, the viewer may miss other attributes in the carving. I'm presently finishing up a very large wood spirit and considering not burning in the pupils. Let me know when you see it...hopefully, sometime later in the week I'll post some pics.
