| I have a question about transferring patterns on to wood for chip carving. I have the "basic Chip Carving" training manual from Pam Gresham (very good by the way), and she says to first lay a piece of "parchment paper" over the design, and trace it on the the parchment paper. After you have traced the design onto the parchment paper, remove the paper and place it on to the board, and tape it in place. Next, slide tracing paper between the parchment paper and the wood. Be sure the marking side of the tracing paper is face down on the wood, then trace the design onto the wood. I have tried flipping the parchment paper, and the tracing paper this side up, this side down, and nothing comes thru to the wood. The parchment paper I'm using if from the kitchen, and is mainly used for lining cookie sheets before baking! Is there another type of parchment paper? Ms. Gresham does not specify as to which type. I have the graphite paper, and the ink jet overhead projector type, but thought I would try this first. Any ideas? Thanks for reading, Rich |

She means tracing paper, from the days before home copiers I would think. Russ |

I use tracing paper if I haven't drawn the picture out . Then I may use carbon paper to retrace the drawing with the paper over the carbon paper transposes to the wood . Hope this helps Bob |

Night be a conflict in terms, here. Tracing paper is thin, almost translucent paper thet you can place over a picture and actually see th epicture through it. Check at art supply stores.. a pad of this stuff is only a few bucks. Carbon paper is inked with a carbon or blue base on one side. It used to be used for making multiple copies on mechanical typwriters, so check at an office supply. There is also an art supply graphite paper that has light graphite on one side instead of the carbon/blue ink. No inky residue with this stuff. Al |

Hey Rich! Graphite transfer paper is easy to use. Remove leftover lines after carving with a Tombow sand ink eraser. Much better than anything you can find in the office supply store. But...the fastest and easiest way to transfer patterns to wood is with the Pattern Transfer Tool - ![]() Look at this page for a quick video demo - https://mychipcarving.com/Chip_Carving/Store/layout.htm You have to use a laser printer or photocopied pattern when using the Pattern Transfer Tool. I use the Pattern Transfer Tool all the time. Use the Tombow to remove leftover PTT lines after carving. Glad to see you're moving ahead with your carving! I use translucent vellum (the kind you put in wedding invitations). It's available at most office supply stores, and it's very see through but also heavy weight so it doesn't cut through as easily from repeated use.

Hi Rich, what I do is go to staples. and make a copy of your pattern. to size of your project. then prepare your wood and then use a spray adhesive . spray the back of your pattern. place it on the wood and carve your pattern. after done use mineral spirits to remove the rest of the patten. no pincle marks, and no drawing. works for me.

Evie I have used this process for a long time with my scroll saw patterns and it works great. Main thing is don't get the spray on too heavy as it will make the toner from the copier smudge. Just a fairly light spray works super.
