I got this knife in a chip carving kit> How is it used and what for???

That there knife is a European chip carving knife... there are about a half dozen or so chip carving knives yet most chip carving can be done with two basic knives -- the cutting knife and the stab knife that most knife makers sell. Most experts will tell you that all the other knives are not needed, but you may find them handy in certain situations. From the looks of the knife in the photo, it looks like it would work nice for free form chip carving.

It is a combination knife that has two cutting edges, on the convex or scimitar blade shape and the concave or hook blade shape. It is a speciality tool that can be used for lettering and free form chip carving. When being used one must always remember that there is NO back edge to the blade but TWO cutting edges. Expirement with it and be very carveful. Stay Sharp and Be Carveful, Don
