| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP If possible and practical I like to undercut as much as possible. It gives it more depth and makes it look more 3D.
That's my two cents.
Susan's right you don't really want to make it free standing.

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP Susan, Mel & Dylan, thanks for your encouragement, tips and friendly suggestions.
Susan, as Mel said 'it's great having Susan back.' Thanks Susan for taking the time to show me what you meant in such a terrific way. You can snitch a copy of my work anytime! I understand now and will do my best to follow your direction. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.
And just in case you needed a hug today here' s one 'HUGS'

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP Thank you, Good Lady!
I did indeed need a Hugs today. We, my beloved hubbie and I, are in that last three day panic as I get the last few thousand loose ends done for the new book before deadline gets me. Crazy making stuff .....
You are already doing undercuts I just don't think you realized it or how wonderfully the ones that you have already made in the sunflower are just pushing that flower right off your backgrounds. Just keep doing what you're doing!

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP So much to do and so little time, but I finally got here! Just wanted to say how much I've enjoyed the progress of the sunflower.
While I can't offer too much technical assistance (but I'm sure soaking in what's already here!) I can say that I'm always inspired by sunflowers... certainly the Mother of all flower's!
I've always been inspired by Van Gogh's paintings of sunflower's, both in the field and in the vase. I always plant sunflowers every year.
Keep up the great work! |

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP Thank you, Susan--I can't begin to imagin what a book deadline would be, I remember a few painting commissions that I thought I was going to brake out in hives.
I really appreciate your suggestions and instruction. I can see where the under-cutting really goes a long way to add depth to a relief carving. I have a cottonwood limb that I've been carving a rodent and I'm going to use under cuts on it too. It will make it stand out from the wood.

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP APRIL 9TH UPDATE
Hi All, I’m still carving away at the sunflower. I think that I have made enough progress from the last sharing for you to see a difference.
I’m working my way around the outside of the flower edge under cutting. It’s slow but I want to do a good job one would think this is actually a large size.
As always I appreciate your thoughts, support and comments.

| | Re: Sunflower Relief WIP Susan & Bob, thank you both so much this is my most challenging so far. I think mainly because I'm using my own pattern my other two were Susan's patterns. Something comforting about being able to see what something already looks like. Hopefully your will look some what like the original. It's kind of like learning how to ride a bike, at some point the training wheels have to come off. LOL
