Hi Mel, thank you....not sure if I'm going to paint it or not. If I do I was thinking along the lines of dry brushing it with oil paints or maybe even colored pencil and use the wip-off method.
Kathy

Whatever method you use, I am sure it will be a great relief carving.
Exciting to see the progress and waiting to see the completed piece.

Kathy
I've never heard of the wip-off method please explain. Dry brushing with oils would be good. When I paint my reliefs I use oils, I always try to let the grain show though.

Ken, Mel, Dylan & Dave:
Thanks guys for your interest and support. Mel and Dylan poor choice of words on my part.
I'll put together a palette of oil color's I plan to use on the flower then without using turps I'll apply the color and immediatly wipe it off with a soft cloth. I'll reapply second and third (or not) applications until I reach the color or effect I'm looking for then, if I feel it's necessary I'll add a burnt umber and wipe it off immediately. So what I'm doing is staining with oil colors. I'm also thinking that I will do some woodburning in the area of the center of the flower before I do the painting. To do it afterwards would be to toxic.
Dave is that the Easter Bunny?
Thank you for your interest,
Kathy

Kathy....if you want it very light...wet the area first, thin your acrylics to the density you want and then apply, you can really get it light that way! easier than painting and wiping off. Geez again! I didn't read the post right, I see you are using oil colors............!

Kathy I do something sort of what Dave just wrote. I seal the Carving with Boiled Lind Seed Oil, I let it dry for a couple of hours, then I used watered down acrylics, so its like milk. I really like the effect it gives it.

I have never really done oils, I have seen it on carvings and it looks good, do you have to prep the wood when you use oil or do you put it directly on the wood?
