Herer's a sunfish relief...about 8"x5"x3/4" thick. Carved in basswood and finshed in acrylic then satin Krylon. This was done as an instructional project. Haven't do ne much carving lately so this was kinda fun to get done, and I hope my instructions help some others at the club. Al Last edited by AlArchie; 05-20-2010 at 04:09 PM. |

Very nice carving. Would you be willing to reveal how you made the scales?

Sure thing, Dicky. They are burned in using a tip I made from brass rod and on an old hobby Burner, I think it's a Walnut Hollow. Turned the tip on my Unimat lathe. With a good pro burner, though, you can buy scaling tips or pens. I draw a few light verical guidelines on the carving to keep the scales alighned, but they still tend to drft a bit. Once the whole body is scaled the "drft" really isn't apparent. Al |

Thanks for the info Al. I don't have a Unimat or anything similar so maybe I'll try a piece of steel brake line and make a hand punch. The tip for the vertical alignment is helpful. Thanks.

Thanks, Merle and Dicky...that brake line should work OK. Take a tapered stone and grind out the inside to an edge, then file half the line away so you have a half circle. You don't even need to burn with a sharp edge like that, just push it into the wood. Actually if you have a small 1/4" or 3/16" diameter veiner, you can use that. I've cut scales that way before. Thanks, Steve. I don't get out fishing a whole lot so I carve 'em instead. Hope to get out on the big lake later next week if the weather holds...too much work around the house and yard right now. Al |
