Summer,
Sugar pine was first noted as becoming scarce by John Muir in 1889.

It is a big tree and therefore a favorite with the lumber industry.

In Oregon, the tree is truely scarce, in California it is still available if you can locate a wood dealer that sells it.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone ever have a chance to cull off the dead limbs or do the loggers get everything.

A lot depends on the area and the landowners. USFS sometimes issues permits to collect firewood from tops of downed timber. I suppose you could just as easly cull carving wood, heck some of mine wind up as firewood! Privately owned lands would be subject to the owners permission. Contact the logging company and find out who the land holders are and maybe they would allow some collecting.

Hi all, sugarpine is harder to get now because the mills have quit cutting anything bigger than 2". there is a drying problem and it takes more time and effort for anything bigger than that. if anyone is interested there is more info on available sugarpine for carving on the wood and supplies thread.

I'm closing this because it's in the "Relief and Chip Carving" forum and has drifted into a sugar pine source discussion.... that, and it was started in January 2006.

Go here Source for Sugarpine carving wood to discuss sources for sugar pine.

If someone wants to discuss relief and/or chip carving on sugar pine, please open a new thread.
