Default Re: Stab and Chip carving knives

I recently took a "stab" at chip charving ( I couldn't resist) I wanted to do mostly for lettering, but I want to also learn another form of carving. I don't have enough experience to suggest a brand- I got a set of Pfeil, but that was because I live by a Woodcraft store. I made the mistake of getting more tools than i needed. I would have only needed a standard chip knife, and maybe a small one. I got pretty much all the chip carving knives they make, thinking you need them all to chip carve. I also bought a chip carving book- had I read that book before hand, I would have saved myself some bucks. On the upside, I wont have to buy another chip carving knife for a very very long time. By the way, it's not as easy as it looks Red Face

A member asked me in a PM if I had some "...fantastic chip carving..." that I was working on.

Well, it's not quite "fantastic" but it's my first go at a full scale chip carving of any size.

If you don't magnify the image much so that you see the breakouts in all of their ugly detail then it looks okay...but then again, it's only a practice piece (aren't they all?) and it's only a piece of wood.

The next one will be better.
Practice, practice, practice.... :-)

Yours looks a lot better than my first attempts. My three-sided chips look like I took a nail and stabbed the wood. Hey... come to think of it, that may look even better than my chips. I wonder if I can get a bulk discount on practice boards?

Hi All,

I'm looking at experimenting with chip carving to see if I like it, and have been researching knives. I'm aware this is an old thread, but couldn't see starting a new thread just for this.

What I'd like to know is if anyone has tried the blue steel chip carving knives made from Aogami steel sold through japanwoodworker.com. These knives have a higher Rockwell hardness level, c63, than any other knives I've seen so they should hold an edge very well, and are laminated so they are most likely very tough too.

Here's a link to one of the knives.

Any comments would be appreciated.
