Anyone use any software for designing chip carving patterns? Maybe Corel Draw or ?

I've wondered if there was some software that may help in designing geometric patterns. I've tried on MS Word and it would only produce some very basic geometric patterns...nothing exciting...

Anyway, I'm new to this site, but have been carving on and off for a few years. I've finished a few picture frames and a few plaques, but really want to get into it again...

I dont know for sure if this will work for you or not but there is a free graphics program called "gimp" that rivals photoshop in functionality. It is an open source project. There is also a version of it that has most of the file menus and options set up to look like photoshop if you are more comfortable with that. I havent played with it in some time but I have it installed on a few different computers that I own or support.

do a google on inkscape its a free-open source program works like gimp or ... photoshop -psp
it can do outline, is why i use it for patterns, but me being an old psp user it dose have a learning curve..

i believe there is a fourm on the download you can use for q&a about the program function

Years ago , there was a simple way of doing what your asking. Mac computers , came with a screen capture you could photo your screen . By using spirograph software and the screen capture you could easilly capture gerometic designs as they came across the screen .

You could do the same thing today using the same techique and simple screen saver programs for line art.

I have a few books by Wayne Barton, I look thru and find some ideas I like and them make up my own pattern, I do that on the wood....bad part is I don't have a pattern to reproduce it later, but then I don't like doing the same thing again, and its an original, no doubt about it lol

I sometimes use MS Excel to create the basic grid, then you can draw the design you want right on the grid. It's a lot easier that way. I set the row height at 13.25, and column width at 1.71. This prints at 4MM squares.

screen capture is easy on ibm, or clone
to catch the screen, hit control + print screen (located above cursor keys)

then open paint or better graphic program create a new file. then click edit and then click paste .....
the effect is that the complete screen will be pasted into the file for editing,
chop out what you want...
remember to save it
