Ken, here's an interesting side note. While researching Lake Superior lighthouses, I came across this. The only "barber pole" lighthouse on the great lakes is the White Shoal Light near Waugashance Island about 20 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. Here's a pic by Adam Beagle of Kalamazoo, Mich. I hope there is no problem posting this as there does not appear to be any restriction on the site. If it does pose a problem, Admin can remove it. Here's a link to the White Shoal site, if the pic disappears. White Shoal Lighthouse Michigan in Pictures Al |

Ken and Andy your signs are very nice and professional looking. I would like to take carving to another step forward and try sign carving, but unfortunately I don't know the first thing about it. I am practicing free hand but that is hard and not professional looking. Any info on this would be appreciated. What tools do you use and type of bits.where do you get your templates to make the lettering so neat? Is there any books or DVD's that I could learn from. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks John

Hi John My lettering basically came from Wayne Barton's first two books. Mainly for two inch or less I use again only 1 chip carving from Wayne Barton. My layouts are from greeting card software that I print from a ordinary printer. After preparing the board I transfer the layout to the board with graphite paper. The rest is chip carved letters on a straight board. Good Luck Andy Davis |

Ken That is beautiful work. How did you keep the paint within the letters? I am thinking of carving some lettered work for my family (names, sayings, etc) as a "Leave behind as a momento") also, do you have any info on leterring templates? Thamks in advance Ed
