Nice signs Ken. What material did you use on them?

Thank you all. The signs are a commission for a business here on Madeline Island. They are carved from locally harvested white cedar. They are painted with Cal-Western acrylic paint.

I'm partial to solid color patterns myself as that is how lighthouses are patterned on Lake Superior, but the pattern was the choice of the customer. I think they look like barber poles, but she loves them.

Nice looking signs, Ken! We'll have to boat on over this summer and take a look in person.

Ken! Great layout on your sign!

Mike and I did signs and truck lettering way back when. I remember one of the 'rules of thumb' was to keep the layout clean, open and crisp to give it the storngest impact. You have got it dead on!!!

The bold white and red vertical of the lighthouse is a real eye catcher.

Thank you Al & Susan. My Dad used to do some sign painting and truck lettering when I was young and I picked up some basic rules from him, but I always avoided doing lettering, even after I started carving. When I started carving for a living I decided I'd better learn to do signs, so I pulled out the reference material I'd inherited from him and updated his information by subscribing to SignCraft magazine. It sure made it a lot easier.

Hi everyone,
I'm the new kid on the block. In the sign carving business for years, POP Displays, and teach sign carving in various spots all over the USA. Next is Florida Roundup in Zepherhills, next Oscoda, MIchigan, in May. Loads of fun, neet people, and a well carved sign make the world a much more beautiful place. Thank God. Some times we need a little beauty in our commuities.
Good luck to all.

Bill Hastings.
