Default Santa in the Frame

I am pleased to share with you this Santa in relief. The pattern comes from a Santa ornament (it was together with an angel) published on this Forum. The original was painted, but I wanted to leave it in the original wood color (lime-wood). Possibly, I could have made another texture in the background. What do you think? Dino

This came out real nice. Good design. If I did it I might have added a washed color to the background to make Santa pop out.

Dinop - by no means did I try to imply that you did anything wrong. You have all the right in the world to create your art any way you choose. There is no right or wrong. About 95 % of all the carving I do is painted - that how I enjoy making them. Others carvers never touch a paint brush. I threw that comment out there to make you think - not necessarily change anything. You did real good and thanks you for sharing it. Hope to see more - Have a Merry Christmas my fellow Santa carver.
Boy am I glad I was able to type this response because I can't speak very well with my foot in my mouth.

Nice work! Stamping the background really makes it jump out don't it!

Ken! Thank for your Christmas woishes that I warmfully reciprocicate. I consider myself still a new carver. Therefore, all comments from senior carvers are most welcome. Well I have a couple of questions for you.
1. Do you think it apropriate that now I paint the background on the star-like textures? If affirmative, which color would you advise to make the relief stand out?
2. I'm not amn English native-speaker. What does it mean by "to speak with one's foot in one's mouth"?
Again Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Dino

1. It's really up to you if you want to change anything. Everyone will have an opionion, I simple expressed mine. However, after thinking about this - I suppose the finishing of a piece (of carving/art) should take into consideration where it will be displayed. Color, if added, should be harmonious with it's surroundings.

2. It looks like I put my foot in my mouth twice by assuming you were familiar with American idioms. I suppose it's a common phrase here in the U.S. I found this from an online dictionary...

Put one's foot in one's mouth and put one's foot in it; stick one's foot in one's mouth
Fig. to say something that you regret; to say something stupid, insulting, or hurtful.
example: When I told Ann that her hair was more beautiful than I had ever seen it, I really put my foot in my mouth. It was a wig.

btw - you English is quite good.

@ Ken. I have a book about English idioms. But as in any language in the world, there are so many that's impossible to know the meaning of all. And probably every day they invent new ones. Well, today I added one to my English (or only American) knowledge. Dino
