In my never ending quest for perfection, I have completed yet another scene of my favorite subject, sailing ship under sail. This scene is reminiscent of the 1840's where sail were a common scene entering our local rivers mouth, on their way to one of the two ports along the banks. One is a topsail schooner and the other a small Royal Navy brig. In this scene I have attempted some sky detail, some light overcast clouds, and a choppy sea, not a bad day for sailing, typical of what you'd expect here along the East Coast of Canada. The brig is just beginning to reduce sail, loosing her topgallands, getting ready to take them in and reduce speed. The waters are shallow here and the channel narrow, so she doesn't want to go aground. The schooner is probably American, and a frequent visitor to the port, as she is maintaining all sail, and looks like she knows the waters well. The tip of Sheldrake Island is off to the left. The wood is Basswood and measures 15" x 10" x 1 1/2" thick. Some burning has been done to add detail and shading. Bob

Wonderful carving and a great story to go with it. Ex-Navy here as well but partial to land. Sailed along the east coast many times but not under sail.

I love this! I live near the ocean, so I really like these kinds of carvings. Lots of pictures in museums here of old schooners.

Bob, Ex Navy here as well, and a former coastal resident for many years. The white caps in this one remind me of a spot just into the Savannah river where the channel is also quite narrow. It is locally referred to as "Hell's Gate" as if you get caught in a storm moving offshore you'll be in for one very bumpy ride. It can scare the pants off of the uninitiated swabby for sure! LOL Good Times! L.P.

It's a great carving, Bob! I love the attention to detail--the waves are really neat and the details on the ship were fantastic! Thanks for sharing it with us--hope you're enjoying the after-winter weather, minus the flies. Donna_T
