Default Run Before The Wind.

This relief of a ship running before the wind has been in the works for a while now. Took my time and tried not to make too many mistakes, the wood is Basswood and it measures 12" x 9". I'm particurlarly happy with the sea in this one. I recieved those new Pfiel tools I ordered and they were perfect for what I intended, the wave action and swell. I have already cut a big slice of Basswood for the next one, several time larger than this.

Yum, yum, I love a good sea scene.

Bob

As a beached Auld Salt it looks good to me Bob. No I never sailed on a fully rigged I'm not that old.
I've had a go at a trawler recently as a change from my usual. Still a bit to do to finish it.

Bob, another successful sea scene. Love those waves. How much bigger are you going?

You can really make that ship come out of the wood Bob. I must get into relief carving as I enjoy any type of scene having to do with the sea or coastline. I've been humming and hawing about carving a kayak scene but I never get down to it. Kayaking is my other passion next to carving.

Beautiful Bob! The burn work is perfect with those wonderfully dimensioned sails!

Is it possible to get a photo of this in profile. I would love to see how deep the carving really is. The burning seems to add a illusion of extra depth.

Very, very nice, Bob. I like the roughness of the sky and waves contrasted with smoothness and crispness of the ship

Glad to hear that you like it folks, I enjoy carving these. I've been doing sea reliefs for years and never seemed to have "struck the right cord" when doing them, until now. I like the way the burning brings to life the sea and the vessels on Basswood. Other woods look better unburned, like Mahogany, but Basswood just seems to shine with a bit of touch up.

Paul, the next piece is 36" x 13" and I'm working on sketches now. My wife had to help me cut it off the board yesterday, heavy bugger it is too. A 2" thick board I've been saving for 15 years or so, for just the right inspiration. Well, I have it and now I'm going to do it. I still have a good size piece of the board left for more scenes.

Susan .... I am attaching a couple of pictures I took just for you to show the depths.
