Default Repairing chip carvings

Due to grain direction, moisture of the wood, type of wood, complexity of the carving, etc., even when I exercise lots of care, I'll have a few blemishes occur in my carving. I would like to repair these problems. I've had some success with super gluing chips back in place that have split out, but these areas always "stand out" when viewing the piece after finishing. What techniques have those of you with more experience than I used to make in-process repairs to a carving?

Mark,
If I can find the chip, I use a small amount of Elmer"s white glue. Apply and hold for a few minutes. Let dry and re-carve. The glue line is not noticeable when finished. I have even carved a comparable chip when I lost the original and did the above. Easier than it sounds.

I agree with Bill K. Be sure to use the "white" glue. Any of the yellow carpenters glue will leave a yellow tinge to your work. Bob
