I'm a novice to relief carving. I've seen carvings with relief texture in parts of them. I believe that these textures were made by metal stamps, but I've been unsuccessful in finding any on the web, other than letters of the alphabet. Is there another term that's more commonly used? Thanks, Dan |

I have used leather stamps before on softwood. You can find them on ebay reasonable.

Woodcraft has carvers punches to do texturing. I've seen a lot of home-made tools too. Mike Carver's Punches - Woodcraft.com |

Most of the wood carving suppliers have a set of texturing stamps.

I made my own, fairly simply. I got a hold of some 3/8 square metal stock... about 12" and cut it into 3" lengths. Then I filed a criss-cross pattern on one of the ends of each piece using a really small file. It's a little difficult, but then again, for the type of texture, perfection isn't required. The key is to take light strokes at first till you get a bit of a groove. Lastly, I ground the shapes I wanted on the end of the metal, one round, one triangle, and I left one square. The advantage of this is that you can tailor it to your specific need. Crude, but very effective and it produces a nice even texture. Cost: around $3 Time: about 5-15 min per punch Last edited by rbloch66; 04-04-2009 at 02:31 PM. |

I use a stove bolt 3/8 by 3-4 inches long and grind and file them. Then you have a nice head to hit on.
