Default Relief of a ship under sail.

I'm not sure if I had posted the beginning of this relief, but have been working at it little by little as time permits. The wood is Butternut, and it is for the top of a cigar box I made myself in Spanish Cedar. Lots of work yet to do, but it's a beginning.

She's a fine lookin' lady Bob, looks like the next couple of waves would bring her right into your living room <grin>
Great choice of timber too, the grain adds to the feeling of movement in the scene, my wife also pointed out that grain made one think of swirling clouds in the sky.......Now the questions..lol....are the bowsprit and jibs etc. undercut or are they actually seperated from the background? It's just that I would like to attempt a carving along similar lines at a future time and would love to know the method used to gain such a feeling of seperation from the background.........anyway, thanks for sharing her with us Bob, and please let us see her as she is completed.

Your sailing ship is looking very good. Perhaps some cloud billows could fill the corners. Are you going to carve a border (frame) from the same wood?
Sailing ships have inspired artists for hundreds of years. The challenge of representing the sails and the waves is appealing.
I've only tried the subject once, in 1973, with a relief/chip carving based on a 1940 Plymouth radiator emblem (which features a stylized Mayflower). There's a photo in the Carver Galleries, titled "Plymouth Emblem."

Well, finished it yesterday and applied a couple of coats of varathane. Nothing fancy, but it does make my cigar box more pleasant to look at. Lots of slight undercutting to make it stand out from the background.

Holy cow that looks really good! The grain really does add to the piece. Very nice piece, Bob.

Ya done Great Bob. Love the way the waves look and the undercutting brings out the ship. Jolly good showing mate!

Bob,

Sorry I missed this , but it has been a bit busy. I like the depth, but I really like the way you turned the waves into the bottom of the frame. Really well done .
